As a student at the University of Illinois, "Barney" Cosneck won two Big Ten wrestling championships. Later he served as Judo instructor in the armed forces, where he co-authored "How to Fight Tough" with Jack Dempsey. In "American Combat Judo" he has adapted the best of Japanese ju jitsu, French foot fighting, Chinese boxing and American wrestling to produce simple but effective techniques for defense and counterattack.
Authored in 1944 and illustrated with 188 photo sequences, this book, considered one of the cornerstones of American WWII era "Combatives" is a unique window into self defense theory and the early evolution of combined martial systems.

Wow! I didn't know about his work preserving/publishing all these old manuals and books. I'll download 'em on my days off. Thanks for sharing.

Kirk Lawson is "teh awesome"! He rocks. Check his lulu page on and off as he is a hard-working man in transcribing all these rare/OOP manuals/books. Buy a book from him to support his efforts if you can.

Ahhh...I see how where the people selling martial arts ebooks on Ebay have been getting there info. I'm glad, now, that I didn't spend the money with them to get this stuff. I'd rather give money to the people who did the actual work. Thank you.

ReplyDeleteYes, never buy stuff off of ebay or websites until you check the net. Even if you google-fu is whitebelt level, you should be able to finid the stuff.
Of course, the vendors' argument is that they have collected the materials and burnt to disc and ready for your use and you saved on time where time is money. I guess it depends if you are the type of person that is willing to pay to save on your own time or the person who refuses to pay for something that is free.
Good luck!
