Randy Couture's Takedowns Animated GIF's Set 1

Last Saturday, June 22, was Randy Couture's 50th birthday! Hope he had a bash on that most blessed of days!

Apologies to my readers for the tardiness. As promised from my Randy Couture's Dirty Boxing animated GIF's post, here is Randy's Takedowns Animated GIF's Set 1. I took the liberty to include Technical Commmentary from my friend Joe Silvia (aka Ausgepicht on some mixed martial arts forums) who is a MMA coach.

Enjoy!

UFC 28-Randy Couture vs Kevin Randleman

UFC 39-Randy Couture x Ricco Rodriguez

Joe Silvia on the above 2 GIF's:

The rest of the footsweeps show you that there is a LOT that Freestyle has to offer that people aren't even aware of.

UFC 44 - Randy Couture X Tito Ortiz

Joe Silvia:

Actually that is a botched takedown that worked in spite. Randy wanted to step his left foot deeper behind Tito's right leg. Hard to see why he couldn't/didn't do it....one of those unseen variables. Could have been a weight shift from either one, fatigue causing him to misjudge or just Murphy's Law. It even looks like his foot skids, maybe on sweat.

It still worked because Randy had a base camp and had Tito's completely destroyed.

UFC 68 - Randy Couture X Tim Sylvia Rd 4

Joe Silvia:

Couture goes for a classic/textbook shin box. Some wrestling circles call it a back heel - in the block family. This is the first double leg on my curriculum that everyone learns due to how easy it is to convey to a noob. It's also effective up to the highest levels of competition as clearly shown by Couture.

UFC 68 - Randy Couture X Tim Sylvia Rd 5

Joe Silvia:

Couture does a penetration step so he can get his hips under Tim's and take control of center mass. When you are connected to an opponent, the two of you become a union, or one mass. He who controls the center of this mass runs the show.

Once Handy has center mass, he follows the next fundamental: canting and tiliting to set up the takedown. This is called Kazushi (sp?) in Judo. You need to attack his base camp....his posture, breathing, and alignment. When you have done that you THEN bring him towards one of the triangle points.

You'll notice in this case, since they are now ONE mass, the triangle point that Couture brings Tim towards is a 3 dimensional one that they are sharing....as all unions do....share. The base of this triangle is Handy's right foot and Tim's right foot. When Handy broke Tim's alignment (spine to head axis) he twisted which lifted Tim's left foot off the ground. He in essence replaced Tim's base with half his own by forcing Tim to use Randy's right foot as a stabilizer instead of his own left foot. Problem for Tim here, is that he is using Handy's right foot as a stabilizer and Handy want's him on the ground.

Tim could prevent this, but he has no base camp to work with. No posture, no alignment. Handy owns center mass.

Again, I hope Randy had a blast on his 50th birthday. Also I hope my readers enjoyed the GIF's.

NEWS: Brutal New Jersey home invasion caught on video

Article and video of an home invasion. As you read and perhaps watch the graphically violent video, keep this in mind:

Even if you are home, keep your home alarm system armed.

It just may be the difference to keep you and your loved ones safe. There are other considerations too including a 'safe room' aka 'strong room' or 'panic room'. I will address these other home defense considerations in a future post.

Brutal New Jersey home invasion caught on video baby monitor

Published June 25, 2013 | FoxNews.com

A New Jersey woman was viciously attacked by a man while her 3-year-old daughter watched — and the girl’s baby monitor captured the brutal assault.

MyFoxNY.com reports that the unidentified woman was attacked early Friday in her home in Millburn. Police said the suspect broke down a door to get into the house and repeatedly punched and kicked the woman before throwing her down a flight of stairs.

"I knew that if I started to scream my daughter would too and I was afraid he would shoot at her. I took it and I didn't cry the entire time," the unnamed victim told News 12.  "They need to help us get him off the street. He's not just a burglar, he's violent."

The woman suffered a concussion and was briefly hospitalized, News 12 reports.

The suspect, who stole jewelry from the home, was described by authorities as black, 5 feet 11 inches tall, weighing 220 pounds with a salt-and-pepper beard.

Anyone with information on the incident should contact the Millburn Police Department at (973) 564-7001.

Lau Kar Leung - 2 Tribute vidclips

Following up my previous posts on the passing of Lau Kar Leung:

Here are 2 tribute vidclips to the late great master Lau Kar Leung:

Lau sifu will be missed. Doh jeh for the inspirations, martial lessons, and memories.

Hong Kong Director and Martial Arts Master Lau Kar-leung Dies at 76

Hong Kong Director and Martial Arts Master Lau Kar-leung Dies at 76

The director of landmark Kung Fu films "The 36th Chamber of Shaolin," starring "Kill Bill"’s Gordon Liu, and "Drunken Master II" with Jackie Chan passed away after a two-decade battle with cancer.

HONG KONG – Martial artist, action choreographer and film director Lau Kar-leung died on Tuesday morning following a two-decade battle with cancer. He was 76.

Lau, a fourth-generation direct disciple of martial arts legend Wong Fei-Hung and a lifelong practitioner of the Hung Kuen discipline, was most famous for his directorial efforts The 36th Chamber of Shaolin (1978), starring Kill Bill’s Gordon Liu, and Drunken Master II with Jackie Chan, which also won him the Best Action Choreography Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 1994.

Lau began his career in film in 1950 as an extra and stuntman in the popular Wong Fei-Hung movies. He then joined Shaw Brothers Studio in the 1960s, forming Lau’s Stunt Team, and became one of the studio’s principal action choreographers. He was particularly renowned for his collaboration with director Chang Cheh during that time on films such as The One-Armed Swordsman (1967) and The Boxer From Shantung (1972).

In 1975, Lau made his directorial debut, The Spiritual Boxer, for Shaw Brothers. He was the first action choreographer to have transitioned to directing. The film proved a hit and was the seventh-highest-grossing movie of the year in Hong Kong.

Lau’s directing work was characterized by a strict adherence to the principles of martial arts. He continued his work as action choreographer and director until 1994, when he made Drunken Master II and III and was diagnosed with lymphoma. He survived the disease and made a directorial comeback in 2003 with Drunken Monkey, which he starred in along with his martial arts protégé Liu. In 2007, at the age of 70, he served as action choreographer and in a supporting role in Tsui Hark’s Seven Swords.

Lau was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award at the Hong Kong Film Awards in 2010 for his contribution to the martial arts film genre.

He is survived by his wife, former actress and solicitor Mary Jean Reimer, and their two daughters.

My deepest condolences to Mary Jean Reimer, her two daughters, Lau sifu's friends, associates and students.

IN MEMORY OF: Lau Kar Leung (July 28, 1936 – June 25, 2013)

It is with deep sadness I report that the famed director/actor/choreographer/martial artist Lau Kar Leung lost his long hard-fought battle with leukemia. Teary-eyed as I type this.

Doh jeh for the memories and inspiration Lau sifu.

He was probably best known for the oldschool Shaw Brothers classic, 36th Chamber of Shaolin (aka Master Killer), but he directed/choreographed in so many of the oldschool Shaw movies including Shaolin Mantis, Challenge of the Masters, Invincible Pole Fighter, Drunken Monkey, Heroes Two, Heroes of the East and even starred in Mad Monkey Kung Fu plus many, many more.

Check out this clip that Lau sifu and his brother put on:

MMA: Riddick Bowe punished in MMA debut

Former Heavyweight Champion of the World in Boxing, Riddick Bowe, tried out MMA. Broke, overweight and older, he's trying to make a comeback. Rumored to have earned $150,000 for this fight - wonder if his opponent even earned 5 figures? Please read on. Video of the fight below article.

Photo Credit:  Chaiwat Subprasom/Reuters ... Former world heavyweight champion Riddick Bowe (left) took a big beating from Russian Levgen Golovin in his Mixed Martial Arts debut in Thailand.

Copied from http://espn.go.com/mma/:

PATTAYA, Thailand -- Riddick Bowe now understands why people warned him that Muay Thai is a dangerous sport.

"I would have to say, they have a valid point," said Bowe, after his debut in Thai kickboxing ended with a thud in the second round. "It's much harder than boxing."

The former world heavyweight boxing champion had hoped to prove his critics wrong and show that he could comeback from retirement into an entirely new sport and revive some of his past glory.

But Bowe is now 45 and weighs 300 pounds, and he looked it Friday in his first fight since 2008.

Slow and out of shape, the fighter known as "Big Daddy" took a big beating from his 30-year-old unheralded Russian opponent Levgen Golovin, who attacked with repeated kicks to the shins that knocked Bowe off his feet five times. The bout ended with a technical knockout after his last fall when Bowe sat on the ground clutching his legs, wincing in pain.

"You can recover from a head shot or a body shot, but when you get kicked in the leg it lasts a long time," Bowe said, as his trainer iced his left shin. "My leg is still hurting. I don't know how long it's been -- 15 minutes?"

Not once during the brief fight, which ended 2 minutes into the second round, did Bowe land a punch or a kick. But he was happy to trade barbs with reporters afterward showing the wit that made him one of boxing's charismatic personalities during his brief reign as champion two decades ago.

"This ain't a setback it's a getback," Bowe said, referring to his comeback. "I had a lot of fun. I'm going to do it again. Next time it's going to be different."

Like so many boxers, Bowe lost the struggle to stay out of the ring. He had his reasons: He's bored with retirement; his millions are gone and he needs the money; he misses the adoration of fans; he loves to fight -- and knows little else.

Bowe said he was inspired by the comeback of George Foreman, who won a heavyweight title at age 45. But the comebacks of aging champions don't always go so well. Think of Muhammad Ali, at 38 and two years after retirement, taking punishment round after round from Larry Holmes. There was onetime heavyweight champion Greg Page coming back and nearly losing his life for a few thousand dollars. Heavyweight great Joe Louis paid dearly for his attempt to come back at an advanced age.

Bowe escaped without serious injury and made $150,000 for his Muay Thai debut, organized by Thai promoters trying to increase the international appeal of Thailand's national sport. The money is a far cry from the millions he earned by beating Evander Holyfield in 1992 to become the undisputed heavyweight champion.

In his heyday, Bowe fought on boxing's grandest stages in Las Vegas and New York.

His return to fighting took place at an outdoor ring set up beside the beach in Pattaya, a Thai town best known for its sprawling seaside red-light district.

Surveying the scene before the fight started, Bowe shook his head sadly.

"I should be moving up, but I'm moving backwards here," he said.

His fight was one of a dozen at the venue, which had the atmosphere of a village fairground with loud music and amusement park rides nearby. Promoters had said they hoped to draw about 20,000 people, but a crowd closer to 1,000 turned up even though admission was free.

On a sweltering night, Bowe sat and sweated for hours as he waited his turn to fight. The venue had no changing rooms, so Bowe and other fighters stripped down and changed in open air tents beside the stage.
"I've never seen anything like this," Bowe said, his spirits lifted by fans who came up to ask for autographs and wish him luck.

One American fan stared in awe at Bowe.

"He was such an underrated and great champion," said Jerry Mathison, a former fighter turned songwriter who lives in Thailand. "I can't believe he's here, in Pattaya."

In some ways, Friday's fight is the latest bizarre episode for Bowe, whose life in and out of the ring was marked by drama.

One of his three fights against Holyfield was interrupted by a parachutist who landed beside the ring. A fight against Andrew Golota in 1996 set off a riot in the ring at Madison Square Garden. Bowe left boxing later in 1996 at 29 for a career in the U.S. Marines, but that lasted only a few days. He then served 17 months in prison for interstate domestic violence after going to North Carolina to haul his now-former wife and their five children back home to Maryland.

Despite his loss, Bowe was optimistic before limping away into a car.

"Hey, we're going to do this again. I'll be back soon," he said. "I'm not a quitter. I want to do it until I get it right."

Bowe's opponent shook his head in disbelief when told the aging boxer plans to return to Muay Thai.
"It would be a big mistake. It's not for him," said Golovin, a trim and fit 220 pounds. "He's too slow and a bit too old."

Here's the fight off of Youtube:

Wish him luck if he does go through with his comeback, but he should stay retired. MMA or even Muay Thai is totally different than Boxing.

Randy Couture's Dirty Boxing animated GIF's

In celebration of Randy Couture's 50th Birthday today, I've made some animated GIF's of "The Natural" in action. I am also going to post some Technical Commentary by my friend Joe Silvia where appropriate.

First up, call it what you want:  Dirty Boxing, Fibbing, Attached Striking, Striking from the Clinch, etc. I call it "Randy-riffic"!  Randy Couture was one of the first if not THE first to do what he is so good at doing - striking while clinched, what many are calling Dirty Boxing, or as the oldtimer pugilists called it - "Fibbing".

Here are 2 GIF's:

UFC 15 - Randy Couture vs Vitor Belfort I

UFC 31 - Randy Couture x Pedro Rizzo I

Joe Silvia:  "Randy was one of the best fibbers. Funny thing is in this GIF Pedro has a dominant tie-up but he can't pull Randy's chin to his sternum because Randy's wrestling neck. BEAST."

Will be working on more GIF's of The Natural's Takedowns. Check back soon.

Wishing my most favorite MMA fighter the Happiest of Birthdays today!

THIS DATE IN HISTORY: June 20

Today marks the 113th anniversary of the start of the Boxer Rebellion in China. Read on!

Boxer Rebellion begins in China

In response to widespread foreign encroachment upon China's national affairs, Chinese nationalists launch the so-called Boxer Rebellion in Peking. Calling themselves I Ho Ch'uan, or "the Righteous and Harmonious Fists," the nationalists occupied Peking, killed several Westerners, including German ambassador Baron von Ketteler, and besieged the foreign legations in the diplomatic quarter of the city.

By the end of the 19th century, the Western powers and Japan had forced China's ruling Qing dynasty to accept wide foreign control over the country's economic affairs. In the Opium Wars, popular rebellions, and the Sino-Japanese War, China had fought to resist the foreigners, but it lacked a modernized military and suffered millions of casualties. In 1898, Tzu'u Hzi, the dowager empress and an anti-imperialist, began supporting the I Ho Ch'uan, who were known as the "Boxers" by the British because of their martial arts fighting style. The Boxers soon grew powerful, and in late 1899 regular attacks on foreigners and Chinese Christians began.

On June 20, 1900, the Boxers, now more than 100,000 strong and led by the court of Tzu'u Hzi, besieged the foreigners in Peking's diplomatic quarter, burned Christian churches in the city, and destroyed the Peking-Tientsin railway line. As the Western powers and Japan organized a multinational force to crush the rebellion, the siege of the Peking legations stretched into weeks, and the diplomats, their families, and guards suffered through hunger and degrading conditions as they fought to keep the Boxers at bay. On August 14, the international force, featuring British, Russian, American, Japanese, French, and German troops, relieved Peking after fighting its way through much of northern China.

Due to mutual jealousies between the powers, it was agreed that China would not be partitioned further, and in September 1901, the Peking Protocol was signed, formally ending the Boxer Rebellion. By the terms of agreement, the foreign nations received extremely favorable commercial treaties with China, foreign troops were permanently stationed in Peking, and China was forced to pay $333 million dollars as penalty for its rebellion. China was effectively a subject nation.

UFC 161: Dana White Post-Fight Media Scrum

Copied from http://www.mixedmartialarts.com/

Following UFC 161, president Dana White conducted his tradition post fight media scrum, as always offering compelling answers to wide variety of topics, including Roy Nelson.

Saturday was the final fight on Roy Nelson's contract, and he declined to resign a new contract before the fight, feeling that with a win and a four fight win streak, his stock would be considerably higher.

However, the reason you have the fight in mixed martial arts is you don't know what is going to happen. Sat Nelson lost convincingly to Stipe Miocic, who was himself coming off a loss.

While the loss will doubtless not help Nelson in the contract negotiation, White said he remains interested.

"I want Roy Nelson in the UFC," said White. "We never said we didn't want Roy Nelson in the UFC. If I didn't want Roy Nelson in the UFC, I'd tell ya - he'd know it, everybody'd know it. You know?

"Roy and I don't have to see eye to eye and be best friends for him to fight here. We don't have to do that.

"It doesn't have to do with Roy's shape, his physique, or anything like that. I've said it before. Roy came to me one time and said I'm having a hard time getting sponsors.

"I said 'Well that's weird. I can't understand why you would have a hard time getting sponsors. How about you cut your hair, lose some weight, get rid of the walk in song I'm Fat? And take yourself seriously - you're a tough guy, you've got a lot of talent. You're a very well-rounded fighter.

"He said 'OK.'

"I saw him at the next press conference, his mullett was longer, he grew a beard down to here, and he was maybe six pounds less than the last time I had seen him.

"I said 'It is good to see you took my advice.'

"Don't complain to me - who wants to put their logo on that? Nobody. Nobody wants to put their logo on that."

At that point a media member suggested Burger King.

"Burger King," replied White. "Well, that's what he thought. You ever watch a Burger King commercial? It's all handsome guys, skinny, and pretty girls. You think Burger King wants people to think that that is what you look like if you eat at Burger King? That's the last thing Burger King wants - 'If you eat Burger King you'll look like F@$%ing this guy with the mullet and the gut."

"Not even Burger King wants that stamp."

Ariel Helwani then asked about a remark White had made earlier in the evening.

"You said to him 'Let's go in a room and do it.' Do you want to go make a deal right now tonight?"

White explained that something had come up that required his discretion.

"No," said White. "There's... he's said he doesn't want to talk about it publicly. So... we won't talk about it publicly. It's not about making a deal.

Helwani then asked if Nelson had an offer?

"Yah, he had an offer," replied White. "A month ago, a month an a half ago."

Helwani pressed further, asking what White meant when he said "Let's go in a room."

White replied a little mysteriously.

"Because somebody is not telling the truth about something," said White. "And he said 'what we need is to...' and I said 'f@$%ing do it right now. Go get everybody in a room RIGHT NOW and we'll see who is telling the truth and who's not."

Helwani continued, asking what it regarded.

"He doesn't want to talk about it publically," replied White. "So I already talked about it too much. I already said too much, so..."

White was then asked what he thought about Nelson refusing the profered contract.

"I've said it before and I'll say it again," said White. "He's got a hell of a chin, and can knock people out, and he ain't going to be winning any f@$%king spelling bees any time soon. Okay? Not the smartest man you will ever meet."

"There's a lot of reasons why I respect Roy Nelson. Roy Nelson rolled the dice tonight, you know? He had a high stakes poker game tonight, and he lost."

"It's not like we're saying 'we don't want Roy Nelson, we hate him here.' We're trying to come to a deal with Roy Nelson. "

White was then asked about Nelson's reference to Daniel Cormier as an "Uncle Tom." White offered mild support for Nelson over the issue, but added "I will say it again, he is not the brightest f@$%ing guy you will ever meet. He's not going to be winning any Nobel Peace Prizes, he's not going to find the cure for f@$%ing cancer, he's not going to win any spelling bees, he's ...

"But if you ask him, he'll tell you he's the smartest guy in the world. He's just not."

White then related an experience from the past where Nelson approach UFC VP for Talent Relations Joe Silva and said his TUF contract was not lucrative enough. Silva offered him a new contract, with a higher pay scale, but as explained by White, it was not enough, so Nelson refused it, and stayed with his original and lower contract.

White was then pushed about Nelson's low pay (he got $24,000 to show, $24,000 win his previous time out).

"Yah," agreed White. "Because he wanted to say on the Ultimate Fighter contract, instead of taking the new deal that was offered to him. It's more money."

White was then asked if Roy was perhaps just stubborn?

"Yah," said White. "That's why he can't be knocked out. That's what I told his wife tonight... He's so thick headed you couldn't knock him out with a f@$%ing truck, you know?"

Helwani then said if you consider for example Nelson's Twitter followers, there are people that relate to Nelson and how he looks.

"People don't relate him in the way that he looks," replied White. "If people related to him in the way that he looks, there'd be sponsors f@$%ing stuck all over him. You're wrong there. What people related to is he's knocked 12 people out in a row. People tune in and watch this guy who looks like he could barely walk up the stairs to the Octagon, and he goes in there an knocks out these guys, like Cheick Kongo, this physical specimen. He hits them in the neck and knocks them out. That's why people like Roy Nelson. And people like Roy Nelson because he is this renegade guy.

White was then asked about Stipe Miocic's performance.

"Roy was talking about a title shot and they'll never give me one," said White. "But you get a guy who can use his hands, and footwork, he'll pick Roy Nelson apart every day, if he doesn't land that bomb on him. Or if he doesn't get that double leg and get him on the ground and smother him for all three rounds.

"That's my frustration with Roy Nelson. If he took himself seriously, if he lost some of the weight, and really trained, imagine what that guy would be able to do. Look at the things that he does now, in the shape that he's in and the things that he does now. He is his worst enemy. Everybody wants to talk about how popular he is... he ain't so f@$%king popular that he's making Georges St-Pierre money, or Anderson Silva money, or Cain Velasquez money or Junior dos Santos money. The guys that are the top of the division, you know? When you're the best you make a $#!*load of money. When you're mediocre, you make mediocre money."

For his part, at the UFC 161 post fight press conference, Nelson expressed the desire to stay in the UFC.

“I want to get past this loss and fight,” said Nelson. “If Dana and Lorenzo want me to be in the UFC then hey, I’ll be knocking on Cain Velasquez’s door or whoever the champ is when I’m knocking on it.”
