Police arrest man carrying long blade who ran into downtown Manhattan restaurant

The unidentified suspect pulled out the blade and ran when confronted by police. He was later cuffed after running into the Central Buffet eatery.

Jefferson Siegel/New York Daily News / A traffic cop spotted a man carrying what looked like a sheathed sword near Howard and Centre sts. in downtown Manhattan on Wednesday.

Cops nabbed a man with what appeared to be a sheathed sword after a cop directing traffic spotted him walking on a downtown Manhattan street.

The unidentified suspect was walking around Howard and Centre streets when the officer spotted an unusual bulge in his pants shortly after 5 p.m., witnesses said.

When the officer approached, the suspect pulled out a sheathed blade and ran away, stunned witnesses said. The officer called for backup and gave chase to the man, who darted into Central Buffet.

Two plainclothes officers arrived and collared the armed suspect in the vestibule of the store.

We were too scared,” said Qi Wei, 23. “All I saw was two undercovers ... they came from that door and ran to there and grabbed him.”

The suspect was placed in an ambulance heading towards a nearby hospital, where he would be given a psychiatric evaluation.
